Flat Rocks Wind Farm Stage 1 and Kojonup DHS entered into a sponsorship agreement on June 2023 for five years. This agreement secured funding of $60,000 to contribute to the purchase of a new school bus in exchange for displaying the FRWF Logo on the bus. Kojonup DHS has since been working with the Department of Education on procurement of the bus. The school finally took delivery of the new Mitsubishi Rosa Bus within the first week of Term 4 2024.
The benefits of Kojonup DHS owning their own school bus is significant to our school community. It allows the school to continually transport students to our school farm, that is used on a regular basis. The growth within our high school and the current offer of Certificate I in Agrifoods for Year 9 and Certificate II in Conservation and Environmental Management for Year 10 students, ensures regular use of our school farm two days per week. Our primary-aged students are also regularly using this facility for our vegetable gardens, poultry projects and our Noongar garden.
Our school also regularly attends regional sporting events and excursions, such as District High School Country Week in Perth, West Coast Fever Netball Cup in Albany, and school camps. The ownership of a school bus allows us to continually support events within our region, whilst keeping costs low for parents.
On Monday the 28th October, two students from each year group across Year 1-10 participated in an excursion to the Flat Rocks Wind Farm Stage 1 (FRWF). We were greeted by Giulia Scataglini, Enel’s Community Engagement Officer who, with a representative from Vesta, toured the children around the warehouse. Students were treated to an interactive display of equipment used for maintaining the wind turbines before heading out to see a turbine up close. The visit also included a firsthand experience seeing observing the maintenance technician’s climb the turbine. Students enjoyed the very wonderful, informative morning at the wind farm. Kojonup DHS would like to extend a thankyou to Flat Rocks Wind Farm for their continued support of our school.
Brendan & Kat - Year 8 – “We were fortunate to attend the Flat Rocks project. We got a guided tour of their warehouse where we got to test and try things that are used in the wind turbines. We also got to visit the turbines, and we saw people go up the huge turbine. Throughout the excursion we were able to ask questions about the project at Flat Rocks. We really enjoyed the excursion and the experience of going out to the project”.
Mitchell & Grace – Year 6 – "Learning about the protective clothing was really interesting”
Lincoln – Year 2 - “We learnt how they sometimes go up in the elevator to fix the top of the windmill. They have to wear harnesses.”
Patsy – Year 3 – “There were 18 windmills. When we looked at the windmills close up they were a lot bigger than they looked.”
Georgia – Year 3 - “I learnt that there are three parts of the stops or breaks to go up the ladder and the elevator takes seven minutes to go up.”
